Location of the Amahoro Gorilla Family

The Amahoro Gorilla Family lives in Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. The park lies within the Virunga Mountain ranges, a chain of volcanic mountains shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The region is famous for its breathtaking scenery, dense forests, bamboo vegetation, and rich biodiversity. The Amahoro group usually stays on the higher slopes of the mountains, making the trekking experience adventurous and physically rewarding for visitors.

History of the Amahoro Gorilla Family

The history of the Amahoro Gorilla Family is closely connected to its legendary silverback leader known as Ubumwe, whose name means “unity.” Ubumwe became famous for his gentle and peaceful leadership style. Unlike aggressive silverbacks that dominate through force, Ubumwe maintained harmony within the family through calm leadership and protection.

The group experienced several challenges over the years, including conflicts with rival gorilla families. One of the most notable rivals was a silverback named Charles, who attempted to take control of the group. During this period, several members left the family, creating instability.

Despite these challenges, Ubumwe successfully rebuilt the family and restored peace among its members. His leadership helped shape the identity of the group, leading to the name “Amahoro,” which symbolizes peace and unity.

The Amahoro Gorilla Family consists of different members, each playing an important role within the group. These members include:

Silverbacks

Silverbacks are the dominant male gorillas responsible for protecting the family and leading daily activities such as feeding and movement.

Adult Females

The adult females care for the infants and help maintain social bonds within the family.

Blackbacks

Blackbacks are younger male gorillas that have not yet developed the silver hair associated with mature males.

Juveniles and Infants

Young gorillas are playful and energetic. They spend much of their time climbing trees, wrestling, and learning survival skills from older members.

The peaceful relationships among family members make the Amahoro group especially interesting to observe during gorilla trekking experiences.

Gorilla Trekking Experience with the Amahoro Family

Tracking the Amahoro Gorilla Family is considered moderately challenging because the group often stays at higher elevations in the Virunga Mountains. Visitors may hike for several hours through dense forests, muddy trails, and steep slopes before reaching the gorillas.

The trekking experience begins early in the morning at the Kinigi park headquarters, where visitors receive a briefing from park guides. The briefing includes information about gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, and trekking expectations.

After entering the forest, experienced trackers help locate the gorilla family. Once the gorillas are found, tourists are allowed to spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat.

During the visit, tourists can watch the gorillas feeding on vegetation, grooming one another, resting, or playing. Watching infant gorillas interact with family members is often one of the most memorable moments of the trek.
