Last Minute Gorilla Trekking
Every single gorilla expedition will bring you to Africa, particularly in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since these are the only places where we can find these endangered species, even this last-minute gorilla trekking will bring you to either one, or two of these countries. The 2 countries being referred to are Uganda and Rwanda since at the moment due to political instabilities in Congo this activity has come to a halt.
Gorilla trekking is one of the most sought safari activities in Africa and it’s almost on every traveler’s bucket list. It takes place in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, and Mgahinga National Park, Uganda. You can also go on a double gorilla trekking experience where you trek gorillas in any of the locations twice or trek in 2 different locations in the same period.
When we talk about last-minute gorilla trekking, we are referring to a gorilla trekking adventure on short notice which may happen due to unavoidable circumstances. People who do these last-minute gorilla trekking may include dignitaries, travelers who are in the country for conferences, meetings, or seminars, individuals who are taking a weekend safari, or those on short notice holidays. Whatever your reasons might be for having a last-minute gorilla trekking, your gorilla trekking experience will be possible, and it will be as incredible as any other gorilla trekking safari though the chances of getting a gorilla permit are higher in the low seasons.
This season runs from March to May and August to November. However, last-minute gorilla trekking in Uganda will most likely take you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park instead of Mgahinga National Park since Mgahinga has only 1 gorilla family and, therefore, sells only 8 gorilla permits per day though it is also possible to have it in Mgahinga National Park. There are also chances of getting a discount if you book a last-minute gorilla trekking permit.
Just like for every gorilla trekking experience, a last-minute gorilla trekking safari also requires you to have a gorilla permit. This gorilla permit can be obtained directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority in Uganda, the Rwanda Development Board in Rwanda, or through a trusted tour operator for both cases.
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda to Volcanoes National Park costs 1500 USD for foreign non-residents, 500 USD for foreign residents, and 200 USD for East African citizens. While in Uganda a gorilla trekking permit costs 800 USD for foreign non-residents, 700 USD for foreign residents, and 80 USD for East African residents. As a tourist on a last-minute gorilla trekking safari, it is also possible to get a discounted gorilla permit in Rwanda during the low seasons. This permit comes with a 30% discount off the original price of 1500 USD for foreign non-residents. All you need to do is book 2 nights in any of the lodges in either Akagera National Park or Nyungwe National Park and the other 2 in Volcanoes National Park with proof of receipt.
What happens on a gorilla trekking adventure?
Deep within the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park or the thick misty impenetrable forest of Bwindi live these magnificent huge gentle creatures that you visit on a gorilla trekking safari. On this safari, you get to come in close proximity to the mountain gorillas in their habitats and watch them for 1 hour after about 2 to 8 hours of searching for the gorilla family assigned to your group of 8 individuals. Not to worry, a briefing is given at the headquarters of the national parks about how this activity is conducted and the rules to follow for a great experience, as well as your safety and that of the endangered mountain gorillas.
