Is a Yellow Fever Vaccine a Requirement to Visit Uganda, Traveling to Uganda, often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa,” promises stunning landscapes, plentiful animals, and a lively culture, but there are certain measures to consider with in the health department that you must full before even you think of packing your bags. Proper planning offers a smooth journey with in the pearl of Africa.

Uganda is one of the nations where yellow fever is a public health problem, and confirmation of vaccination is not simply advised, but a mandatory important factor for entry with in the pearl of Africa.

Wondering whether a yellow fever vaccine is a mandatory requirement with in Uganda, the answer is yes. The yellow fever vaccination certificate is among the must key entry requirements while entering Uganda in compliance with the health standards.

According to the International Health Regulations and the country’s own public health policies, a yellow fever certificate is a must. This is done to ensure safety of lives of both the citizens and visitors.

You must be in position to present a valid World Health Organization (WHO) International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) upon arrival at Entebbe international airport. The vaccination should have been administered at least 10 days before travel to be effective.

Important notice.

With out the yellow fever vaccine certificate, entrance may be prohibited, however you can still resort to being vaccinated upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport but this is less optimal due to the time delay and increased cost.

Age requirement

Please note that the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory to travelers visiting Uganda from the age of 9 months (or one year) and above

Certificate validity.

The yellow fever vaccine is effective for about 10 days after its delivery and it ensures life long immunity.

Certificate format

The certificate must be official from the WHO ICVP (also known as the “Yellow Card”) It should involve proper details, stamp, and signatures

Exemptions and special considerations

  • There are limited exemptions for individuals with medical contraindications and various health measures.  The vaccine may be exempted to various groups of people such as
  • Children with an age of 9 to 12 months
  • pregnant women (based on each person’s health status)
  • People with compromised immune systems (e.g., low CD4 count in HIV/AIDS)
  • People with serious egg allergies or other conditions that prevent them from receiving vaccines.
  • Elderly people above the age of 60-69 years. This is because these people tend to suffer from certain diseases.

Make sure if you have some of the above exemptions please carry your medical exemption certificate from your authorized health provider, that you will provide to the Ugandan health authorities in order to qualify for entry with in Uganda.
