Ruhija Sector

The Ruhija sector is situated in the eastern region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is located on the eastern side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is readily accessible from either Kabale or Buhoma. It serves as a habitat for a significant population of mountain gorillas. The Ruhija Sector is Bwindi’s tallest and possibly the most exquisite gorilla-watching area. It is located at an elevation of approximately 2340 meters above sea level. The area provides stunning vistas of the wooded ridge and the remote Virunga Volcanoes. Certain segments of the route provide stunning vistas of the western rift valley.

The sector commenced gorilla tracking in 2008. The Ruhija sector comprises four habituated gorilla groups: the Bitukura family, the Oruzogo family, the Kyaguriro group, and the Mukiza group. The Kyaguriro Gorilla troop, formerly designated for study, has been completely habituated for gorilla tourism. Additionally, it is important to mention that a maximum of 8 individuals are permitted to monitor the habituated gorilla family.

Ruhija has fewer gorilla groups than the Buhoma sector. Ruhija is an essential sector for an optimal ecotourism experience. Another benefit of gorilla tracking in Ruhija is its somewhat less mountainous terrain compared to Rushaga and Nkuringo. This is the optimal destination for elderly travelers seeking trekking opportunities.

In addition to gorilla trekking, birdwatching is available in the Ruhija sector.

The inauguration of the Bitukura group of gorillas in July 2008 has transformed Ruhija from a sanctuary solely for passionate birdwatchers. Birdwatching aficionados were the predominant segment of tourists to Ruhija in their pursuit of numerous Western Rift Valley endemics. The Green Broadbill is a premier species that all birdwatchers must observe in Ruhija. The forest track leading to the marsh is arguably one of the most magnificent day hikes on the continent. The path descends sharply along the hill, offering unobstructed vistas of pristine rainforest on both sides. Upon reaching the valley floor, small mosquitoes, drawn to your sweat, render prolonged stay intolerable, overshadowing the breathtaking yet hellish ambiance. An insect repellent and ample water for the return hike are essential requirements for the day bag.

The park features a primate walk, providing an opportunity to observe white and black colobus monkeys as they traverse the tree branches in this area. Tourists lacking funds for gorilla trekking might consider birdwatching or primate walks, which are more economical options.

The Ruhija sector is situated mere meters from the Crater Lake of Bunyonyi, an exquisite locale for relaxation post-gorilla trekking. Visitors can engage in canoe rides on Lake Bunyonyi to further appreciate the captivating landscape of hills and islands, complemented by the rich native Batwa culture.

Batwa Cultural Excursion

The Batwa cultural tour is an exceptional activity to partake in following gorilla trekking in the Ruhija district. The Batwa cultural tour offers the opportunity to engage with the Batwa/Pygmies, acquire knowledge about their culture, hunting and gathering techniques, and their historical existence in Bwindi Forest prior to its designation as a national park. Participants will visit traditional healers who utilize herbal remedies for various ailments, hear ancient narratives, and partake in traditional entertainment, among other activities.

Nature walks

The nature walk in the Ruhija sector is an adventurous activity that allows tourists to explore the park on foot, accompanied by an armed park ranger and a knowledgeable guide familiar with the hiking paths. On the guided nature walk, you will traverse various trails, including the Mubwindi Swamp Trail and the Bamboo Trail, where you can observe diverse primates such as L’hoest monkeys, numerous bird species, forest elephants, vibrant butterflies, and appreciate the melodious sounds of avian life, as well as the picturesque landscapes, waterfalls, and caves, among other attractions.

Mountain riding and cycling

During the mountain biking excursion in the park, you will be assigned a skilled guide and commence cycling over well-maintained paths, visiting small towns and farmlands, while observing the indigenous populace and many bird species, among other attractions.

When is he best time to visit  Ruhija Sector

The Ruhija sector is accessible year-round, although the optimal period for visitation is during the dry season, specifically in June, July, August, September, December, January, and February. During these months, rainfall is minimal, resulting in dry and navigable trekking trails and access roads, thereby facilitating easier trekking compared to the wet season, when trails become muddy and slippery, complicating the trekking experience.

How to  get  to Ruhija Sector

The Ruhija sector is situated between the Buhoma Gorilla sector to the north and Kibale town to the south, facilitating easy access from both directions. Clients from the Ruhija sector can access Queen Elizabeth National Park, the second largest national park in Uganda, following Murchison Falls National Park. This enables tourists seeking to trek mountain gorillas to have sufficient time for a wildlife drive in the Ishasha district, as well as to observe the tree-climbing lions.

The most suitable route from Kampala is via Kabale Town. Departing from Kabale, proceed along the paved Kisoro Road and make a right turn at Ikumba Village. From Ikumba, go 12 kilometers, adhering to the clearly marked signposts to reach the briefing place.

The drive from Buhoma is a direct route of around 50 kilometers. The journey traverses breathtaking picturesque landscapes along the route.

Individuals driving to Ruhija will encounter particularly difficult stretches of the route, especially following substantial rainfall. The drive is exceptionally remarkable, particularly the segment from the junction of the Kabale-Kisoro road to Ruhija.

If you rely on public transport, this is one of those challenging locations to access. You undoubtedly have a task that may need extensive walking if time is limited. Consequently, it is advisable to utilize private automobile hiring services from either Kampala or Kigali.

Ruhija can be reached by air from various directions. For travelers originating from Kampala/Entebbe, it is advisable to traverse through Kabale town before continuing to Ruhija.
Travelers originating from Kampala may divert at Ntungamo towards Rukungiri, Kihihi, and Butogota, thereafter driving an additional two hours to reach Ruhija.
All these routes necessitate a four-wheel-drive vehicle, as many segments of the road are rugged, uneven, and dusty, and during the rainy season, they tend to become muddy.

There are no direct flights to Ruhija; therefore, the sole option is to fly to Kihihi, which is situated on the Buhoma side, and subsequently drive two hours to Ruhija.
Charter flights can also facilitate your arrival in Kabale town, from where you can travel to Ruhija.
