Mabamba Wetland Swamp is a wetland found just at the outskirts of Kampala and is home to over 190,000 birds with the major bird watched here being the Shoe Bill stork. This wetland is located 55km from Kampala along the shores of Lake Victoria covering an area of over 2400 hectares.

The 1 Day Mabamba Birding Tour starts with waking up very early in the morning have a cup of tea then at 7 am, you will be met by a very knowledgeable driver/guide from gorilla expeditions who will brief you about the day’s activities and there after jump on to the safari jeep for the trip. It is a 1hr and 30 min drive to this wetland.

The wetland is newly discovered home for the most sought after bird- Shoe bill. So birding is done on the canoes in marsh channels so we expect you to jump onto one of the wooden canoes that are available at this wetland and then move into the waters in search of the several bird species at this water catchment area of Lake Victoria.

Most of the birds here include White winged Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek, Yellow-backed Weaver, Northern Brown – throated Weaver, Blue-headed Coucal, and other swamp specialties.

You will look out for shoebill Stork both in the sky and down on the marsh, Also look out for the Swamp Flycatcher, African purple Swamphen, African Water Rail, Common Moorhen, Lesser Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, White-faced Whistling-duck, Squacco Heron, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Winding Cisticola, Goliath Heron and Black Crake. Additionally there is a nature/cultural tour on the Nansubuga hill if time allows, the hill is a Buganda kingdom cultural site belonging to one of the clans.

It consists of tombs believed to be 600years, rock board games and a scared forest. There will be a lunch break for a snack before returning to Kampala and this will mark the end of the trip.
