5 Days Gorilla Habituation & Chimpanzee Habituation
5 Days Gorilla Habituation & Chimpanzee Habituation, Gorilla groups progressively become acclimated to human observers through a methodical and delicate process known as “gorilla habituation.” While Chimpanzee Habituation refers to the practice of teaching chimpanzees to become accustomed to humans in the wild. It typically takes two to three years and is carried out by researchers, physicians, trackers, and rangers.
You can participate in a four-hour gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and an intimate chimpanzee habituation session with Kibale Chimpanzees (and other primates) throughout the five-day vacation.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport – Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.
Day 1 of the safari starts with a pick up from Entebbe International Airport by our professional Driver Guide from Active African Vacations who will meet and greet you. From there, you will have a scenic drive to Kibale Forest National Park with enroute. We travel through traditional village farms that grow millet, corn, bananas, and coffee.
The park is located in Western Uganda, Kabarole district. The journey takes about 5-6 hours from Entebbe. Upon arrival, you will check into the lodge for relaxation as you cool off from the long journey, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience
In Kibale, chimpanzee habituation begins at 6:30 AM at the park’s main headquarters. The tour guide will make sure you have all the help you require to arrive at the park offices on time for pre-habituation experience briefing. After that, you will be given a group of rangers and chimpanzee habituation personnel to go with you to a troop of chimpanzees that have been reserved especially for tourists to experience chimpanzee habituation. The chimps you visit may not be as scared when you approach them because they have been getting visitors for a while, but they are still wild. The goal is to give tourists a genuine understanding of the steps experts take to ensure the chimpanzees are safe for regular tourist viewing.
It’s usually not too physically taxing to stroll through the Kibale forest. In addition to larger species like forest elephants and buffalo, the forest is home to different primates such as Olive Baboons, Blue Monkeys, Vervets, Red-tailed, Bush babies, Pottos, Black-and-white Colobuses. The chimpanzees may not be visible for one to two hours. In the forest canopies, you will initially hear them pulling and hooting. The guides will follow the source of the noise because it is so obvious.
Once you locate the chimps, the process enables you to watch the animals for several hours while they go about their everyday lives, allowing them to become accustomed to human presence without altering their natural habits. While you take your notes and photos, the chimps will continue to engage in their regular activities, such as hunting, patrolling, playing, fighting, copulating, and nursing their young.
The gentle walk back to the park headquarters will mark the conclusion of the chimpanzee habituation experience. Here, you will be awarded a certificate. Return to the lodge.
Day 3: Transfer Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
On this day, you will wake up very early in the morning for breakfast. Afterwards, your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for yet another exciting encounter. The journey takes about 6-7hours therefore it’s advisable to leave very early in the morning.
Beautiful vistas of savannah grasslands, verdant terraced hills, the renowned Virunga highlands, and crater lakes may be seen throughout this trip. There are plenty of breaks where you may take pictures and soak in the sights. On arrival, check into your lodge to refresh. Dinner and Overnight stay.
Day 4: Gorilla Habituation Experience
On this day, you will head out with packed lunch to the forest. Your driver guide will transfer you to the briefing center. The Bwindi gorilla habituation experience provides visitors with a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of this process. Only four visitors may participate in the gorilla habituation experience each day, and they are only permitted to spend up to four hours with the mountain gorillas. You will have the chance to participate in the gorilla habituation process while the rangers and researchers carry out their regular observation routine. You are free to take as many pictures and notes as you like, ask any questions you may have, and watch the mountain gorillas go about their everyday lives.
Since 2015, humans have started visiting the gorilla group for the habituation experience (for tourists), and they have become completely accustomed to it. As a result, the gorillas won’t flee from you or even charge at people. In order to maximize the benefits for tourists, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has permitted the gorilla habituation experience with this gorilla family.
Before you see the gorillas, you will typically have to hike for one to three hours. Bwindi has dense undergrowth and is an afro-montane forest. Some people find trekking up its hills and slopes to be a moderate physical hardship, but there are many stops scheduled so that everyone can get to the gorillas and back.
Day 5: Return to Entebbe International Airport.
This day marks the end of 5 Days Gorilla Habituation & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari.
