Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest & Canopy Walk Experience
Your journey begins with an early departure from Kigali, heading southwest toward Nyungwe Forest. The drive (approximately 5–6 hours) is incredibly scenic, with rolling hills, tea plantations, and rural countryside views that showcase Rwanda’s nickname “The Land of a Thousand Hills.” You may choose to stop at the Ethnographic Museum Rwanda to gain insight into Rwanda’s history and culture before continuing your journey.
Upon arrival at Nyungwe, check into your lodge and enjoy lunch surrounded by dense rainforest. In the afternoon, head out for the famous canopy walk one of East Africa’s most thrilling forest experiences. Suspended high above the forest floor, this walkway gives you a bird’s-eye view of the jungle and a chance to spot monkeys and colorful bird species.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Transfer to Lake Kivu
Rise early for a once-in-a-lifetime experience—chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. After a briefing by park rangers, you’ll enter the forest at dawn when chimpanzees are most active.
The trek can vary from 1 to 4 hours depending on the movement of the chimps. Once located, you will spend one magical hour observing them—watching their social interactions, listening to their calls, and witnessing their remarkable intelligence up close. Nyungwe is also home to over 12 other primate species, so expect sightings of colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and more along the way.
After the trek, return to the lodge for breakfast before transferring to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Arrive in the afternoon and relax by the lakeside. You can take a short walk, enjoy the sunset, or simply unwind after your trek.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, depart Lake Kivu and drive north toward Volcanoes National Park (approximately 4–5 hours). The route is scenic, passing through vibrant towns and terraced farmland. Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga mountain range and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. This region is also closely associated with Dian Fossey, whose conservation work brought global attention to these incredible animals.
Arrive in time for lunch at your lodge, followed by a relaxed afternoon. You may choose to visit a local community or simply prepare for the next day’s trek. In the evening, attend a pre-trek briefing where you’ll receive guidelines for interacting with gorillas.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking & Return to Kigali
This is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for registration and briefing. You’ll be assigned to a gorilla family group based on your fitness level and preferences.
The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. As you hike through bamboo forests and misty slopes, the anticipation builds. Once you encounter the gorillas, you will spend one hour in their presence. Watching a silverback lead his family, observing playful juveniles, and witnessing gentle interactions is a truly humbling experience. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch before driving back to Kigali (approximately 2.5–3 hours). End of Tour.
