Primates. The very mention of Rwanda and Uganda entices one to embark on a primate safari holiday amidst Africa’s tropical jungles, where pristine exotic vacations are attainable through monkey safari experiences. Encountering Africa’s primates is unequivocally one of the most gratifying experiences available on a Rwanda safari, particularly with the opportunity to observe the world’s largest living primate, the Mountain Gorilla, making it an indelible highlight of a gorilla safari tour

Other lesser primates, including chimpanzees, lemurs, monkeys, and baboons, are captivating and highly gratifying species to see while primate watching. Their relationships, communications, mobility, and intelligence are all conspicuously observable, serving as evidence of our kindred with this remarkable family of exquisite animals that may be visited.

Rwanda is famous for its gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, but it also hosts chimpanzees and many monkey species, including colobus, golden, L’Hoest’s, owl-faced, Dent’s, blue, and vervet monkeys, in addition to olive baboons, nocturnal pottos, and bushbabies.

Chimpanzees inhabit Nyungwe National Park and, to a lesser extent, Gishwati Forest. Chimpanzees are social animals that inhabit large communities and engage in daily movement to forage for sustenance or occasionally hunt smaller mammals. They construct new nests in the trees nightly.

Chimpanzees are often audible prior to being visible, as their vocalizations resonate throughout the jungle during their bonding rituals. Tracking commences at 5:30 AM and may extend from one hour to several hours, contingent upon the location of the chimpanzees; guests are permitted a maximum of one hour with them once located.

The landscape may be hilly, treacherous, and muddy, traversing dense vegetation. Appropriate footwear is crucial, with a requisite degree of fitness. Permits may be obtained online, at a Regional Development Bureau office, or through a tour operator. Golden monkeys inhabit Volcanoes National Park and Gishwati Forest. In the former, two groups can be monitored: one on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi and the other in the bamboo forest of Mount Sabyinyo. This is an independent excursion, departing daily from the Kinigi headquarters.

Other primates are usually seen on more generalist nature trails.

Colobus monkeys constitute a distinctive supergroup in Nyungwe, characterized by their black and white coloration and elongated fur, making them an ideal subject for wildlife photographers. Nyungwe is also home to owl-faced monkeys with beak-like noses, Dent’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervets.

L’Hoest’s monkeys are native to the Albertine Rift and inhabit Nyungwe and Gishwati Forests. They possess a dark coat and a white beard, residing in small, female-dominated groups with one male.

Akagera National Park hosts olive baboons and vervet monkeys, observable during safari excursions. Other species are exclusively nocturnal, such as the little potto, which is closely related to Madagascar’s lemurs, and bushbabies, characterized by their prominent big eyes for enhanced night vision and bat-like hearing for locating insects in the dark.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

An immensely impactful experience that confronts you with one of our species’ nearest relatives, the expedition in Volcanoes National Park with Gorilla Expeditions  is truly transformative.

The influence of each gorilla trek is undeniable, as Rwanda’s gorilla excursions play a significant role in the protection of mountain gorillas, chiefly via forestry efforts.
